The 2009 exhibition has just launched, featuring 65 new desktop wallpapers! Designers and developers spend about 90% of their waking life in front of a computer so the most appealing genre for a wallpaper would be one that has beautiful design mixed with the all important aspect of being outdoors.
i dont want to be a party pooper... but im a bit disappointed.
although it is great that this appears to be the exhibition with the most works to date, some of them are really not up to par. i dont want to give specific examples because i dont think thats fair, but some of them use very low res images that when blow up become grainy and pixelated - those should of never been accepted, neither should ones that were poorly blended by what appears to be someone a bit new to photoshop. i was also disappointed that some of the works used very common filters - those really take away from a work in most cases (the work i am referring to was really amazing on its own, the added grain filter really took away). there were also a couple of all vector designs that while were well made... arent really in the spirit of desktopography, which i always thought was the combination of photography and design and manipulation, not just vectors. perhaps im wrong?
although there are a bunch that i feel dont belong, there are a few that i thought were really spectacular and a bit groundbreaking (some of them).
ive always been a fan of desktopography and i look forward to future exhibitions, although i hope the next one has a bit stricter quality control.
Increasing the advised resolution size should never mean the lose of quality. The variety of quality in works was noticeable. Out of 65 I found 7 to be usable as my new wallpaper. (That's purely because I have high res. monitor and I'm sort of 'quality-addicted' though.) Some of the best ones imo; Fight for Alpha, Nature's Capture, PaperPlanes, Desktop 1 & NSP1. Some very nice entries suffered from the low-quality base image.
